Curtis is the debut solo album from a man who by the time it was released in 1970, was already a bit of a legend, having written for/produced/anchored the Impressions and collaborated extensively with @iceman Jerry Butler. It's a work of genius, as many things were with Mr. Mayfield, and set off an inferno of reverential, trailblazing soul that would absolutely remake the foundations of the genre. What to say about Kim Weston? Her 1970 album Big Brass Four Poster is fun as hell, with a lot of style and plot twists and just tears through songs by Bacharach/David, George Harrison and Simon Garfunkel, among others. Ann Peebles is one of the best lady soul singers in the history of the genre. And she wrote. She wrote a lot. Her I Can't Stand The Rain is only interestingly different because it's the first to sell reasonably. This is Ann's 4th album after three absolute scorchers. She followed this with 1976's Tellin' It. Which is also just amazing. The Peebles is a 5 tool Soul Hockey Player - writing, voice, presence, power and even production. She's a superstar that business considerations left out in the cold.
